Panoramic Bar in Kata Beach
The Commune Resto Bar is a popular seaside terrace bar perched above the rocks between Karon Beach and Kata Beach. Despite being tucked away at the end of a narrow street, this hidden spot has gained significant traction with travellers, especially selfie enthusiasts. Its appeal goes beyond its scenic location above the ocean, as it also benefits from the popularity of its neighbours, A Blanket and A Pillow and Laem Sai Cup Cafe.
With changing trends, young photographers seem to seek more creative settings than beaches or coconut trees. What makes The Commune an exciting photo spot is the network of staircases leading from the garage above to multiple terraces on either side. A prime photo spot lies midway down the stairs, offering a well-framed view of the ocean below—and as expected, there’s often a queue for that shot.
The Commune Resto Bar offers drinks and light food on its main terrace, with a bar and kitchen near a small pool. While it’s often buzzing with a young crowd, we managed to find seats easily and only ordered drinks. Note that there’s a 180 baht entrance fee at the top, which can be redeemed at the bar—a measure introduced to deter visitors who came solely for photo shoots without supporting the venue.
A heads-up for drivers: parking can be an issue. Scooter spaces fill up quickly, and parking further away might be necessary. If you drive a car, be prepared for a tricky U-turn in the narrow, dead-end street.
