Tha Maharaj Riverside Complex

What to Do at Tha Maharaj?

Tha Maharaj is a riverside community mall in Bangkok’s Old Town, just next door to Tha Phra Chan Pier. It’s one of those places I like to stop by after wandering around the temples or the amulet markets nearby. While Tha Phra Chan has that old-school charm, Tha Maharaj brings in a more modern, relaxed side of Bangkok, and a short riverside walk connects both.

The mall is open-air and built across several levels, right along the Chao Phraya River. The ground floor is where most people start — it’s lined with cafés, Thai and international restaurants, and casual dessert spots. The seating spills out along the riverfront, which makes it a great place to rest your legs and enjoy the view with a drink in hand. It gets a lovely breeze in the late afternoon.

Upstairs, you’ll find a few small Thai-brand boutiques selling clothes, crafts, and accessories. It’s not a big shopping centre, but it’s good for picking up gifts or something local without the usual tourist clutter. I’ve found some nice handmade items here that weren’t easy to spot in the bigger malls.

At the very top is a quiet rooftop garden, with greenery, shaded benches, and a small pond. It’s usually not crowded, and if you go in the early evening, it’s one of the better spots in the area to catch the sky changing colour over the river.

Tha Maharaj may not be a major shopping destination, but it’s a very pleasant stop, especially if you’re already visiting the Grand Palace or walking through Tha Phra Chan. It’s relaxed, clean, and easy to enjoy without rushing.
