Phuket Town Photo Gallery
Phuket Town is the island’s historic centre, located on the east coast away from the beaches. The old quarter is full of colourful Sino-Portuguese shophouses dating back to the tin mining era, many of which have been restored and turned into cafes, small hotels, and galleries.
Thalang Road is the main street of the old town, lined with restored buildings and a good selection of local restaurants. Side streets like Soi Romanee and Dibuk Road are covered in street art, making the area one of the best places in Phuket for photography. The architecture is unlike anything you will see at the beaches, with a strong Chinese and European influence from the 19th century.
The Sunday Walking Street Market transforms Thalang Road into one of the liveliest street markets on the island, with food stalls, crafts, and live music every week.
I have been walking these streets with a camera since the mid-1990s, and the transformation of Phuket Town over the past 30 years has been remarkable. Many buildings that were crumbling when I first arrived have been beautifully restored. The photos in this gallery show the old town’s architecture, street art, shophouses, and atmosphere across different years. All photos are my own. For the full walking guide, see Phuket Town.
