Kata Beach Photo Gallery

Kata Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Phuket, known for its wide curve of soft sand and clear blue water. The beach sits on the west coast, south of Karon Beach, and is surrounded by green hills on both sides. A small rocky island called Koh Pu sits just offshore and adds to the scenery, especially at sunset.

The northern end is usually quieter, while the southern section has more restaurants, bars, and activity. Swimming is easy during the high season, and from May to October, Kata becomes one of the best spots on the island for surfing.

Kata has a more relaxed feel than Patong, but still has enough going on to keep things interesting. The streets behind the beach have a good selection of restaurants and hotels at every budget level.

I have been photographing Kata Beach since 2000, and the photos in this gallery show the beach across different seasons, from the calm, clear days of high season to the dramatic surf during the monsoon months. All photos are my own. For the full travel guide, see Kata Beach.

I arrived in Phuket in 1994 and have never left. After travelling through 40+ countries and working with Club Med and Expedia, where I created the Hotels.com Go Guides international travel guide with my team, I launched Phuket 101 in 2011 to share what I've explored, discovered and learned. Everything here comes from personal experience, with my own photography and videos from across Thailand.View Author posts
