Red Sky Rooftop at Centara Grand
Red Sky Rooftop on the 55th floor of the Centara Grand in Bangkok is an upmarket restaurant and bar with relatively better prices when compared to Sky Bar Rooftop or Vertigo at Banyan Tree. The name is wisely chosen if you get one of those amazing sunsets. Of course, some days it rains, or some days the sky is not very red, but we were lucky as usual and witnessed an amazing sunset. The popular part of the restaurant is the outdoor circular terraces, but they planned for the rainy days with a beautifully decorated indoor room with large windows, so if rain starts, it’s not all lost.
You can just come for a drink on the circular open floor above, offering spectacular 360 views of the Bangkok skyline. Pick a comfortable sofa and enjoy very nice live music, playing just at the right level and above average. It is always fun to look from the top place you thought you knew well and discover places you never saw, such as the Royal Residence and Siam Kempinski Hotel.
Below you are the gigantic CentralWorld Shopping Mall, Siam Paragon, Siam Center and MBK Center just beyond. The only place that still can brag about being able to look down at you is the Baiyoke Tower nearby with its 84 floors…
We could describe the millions of puzzle pieces that make Bangkok, but you better see it by yourself. As the dinner is rather expensive, you can just come for a drink and enjoy their happy hour, buy one get one free on most drinks, and no reservation is required.
Once the sun has set, everyone returns to the dining floor, where very nice, attentive and polite waiters will take your order or recommend the specials in good English.
We had half a dozen ‘Fine de Claire’ oysters and a great King Crab tartar for entrees, lamb shank and Kobe beef short ribs as main courses and ended with a warm chocolate fondue to dip fresh strawberries, melons, mangoes and home-made marshmallows. Dessert was a sin since we were already full when we ordered, but it felt so right to end dinner in such a place with a sweet treat. Expect to pay 1,000 to 1,500 baht per dish; we warned you 🙂
Best of all, the Centara Grand is just above CentralWorld, one of the largest shopping malls in Asia! So explore and burn these calories while browsing for brand sales! They almost have sales going on all year round!
Cru Champagne Bar
Few people know there is another and even more impressive rooftop bar above Red Sky. Cru Champagne Bar is, as the name indicates, the top of the rooftop bars in Bangkok. Walking around, you will notice a small elevator that takes you 3 floors up to a circular platform with a central round bar. Drinks are all Champagne or champagne-based, so it’s not for everyone, but if you want to have that unique experience, have one glass! The access is very strict, though: no drinks, no access, and the prices are as high as the floor!
