45 Great Local Thai Restaurants in Phuket

Reviews of the Best Local Thai Restaurants in Phuket ✓

Our list of the best local Thai restaurants in Phuket keeps growing because local food in Phuket is great, especially if you step away from Patong Beach! We chose not to list any places and no trendy venues here; our blog is about local food and only local food! These restaurants are not fancy, and all are cheap: they don’t care about the decor, and they sometimes forget to smile; it’s all about efficiency and great taste. Some of them might appear dirty if you are not used to local experiences, so if you don’t like busy places, plastic chairs and plates, toilet paper as napkins and ice cubes in your beer (and sometimes MSG), you probably will not print our page to take it with you. If you want to know what makes people queue in Phuket, prepare for a real dining experience!

Our list of local Thai restaurants in Phuket is, of course, very subjective. We know other places would make it to the list, but here are the best-known local shops for two decades. We also built a map at the end of the page to help you locate these fancy places.

Kruvit Floating Restaurant

Phuket Floating restaurant

Speciality: Seafood – Location: Phuket east coast

Popularity: 8/10 – Atmosphere: 10/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 5/10

Kruvit Floating Restaurant is one of those classic Phuket experiences that hasn’t changed much over the years — and that’s exactly why I keep going back. Located on a series of wooden rafts just off the east coast of Phuket, the whole place floats gently on the sea, facing Koh Maphrao (Coconut Island). You park on the mainland, hop on a short longtail boat, and in just a few minutes, you’re out there, surrounded by water and fresh air. It’s peaceful, rustic, and full of character.

The seafood is as fresh as it gets. You can even see the live fish and crabs swimming around in netted enclosures below the walkways. I often go for the steamed crab, deep-fried sea bass with garlic, and stir-fried squid with salted egg — all simple but packed with flavour. The menu is extensive, and prices are fair for the setting and quality.

It’s not a luxury place, and that’s part of its charm. It feels real and honest, with no frills — just good food and a unique setting. If you want to taste old Phuket, which is far from the tourist crowds, Kruvit Raft is a must. Just try to go at high tide — the view is better. Read more

Mor Mu Dong

Mor Mu Dong Restaurant Phuket

Location: Chalong – Specialities: local Thai food, seafood

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 8/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 7/10

Mor Mu Dong is one of those places you wouldn’t just stumble across — you need to know where to go. Hidden deep in a mangrove area near Chalong, this incredibly local restaurant is made up of wooden huts on stilts, surrounded by greenery and small canals. It feels more like a secret hideout than a restaurant, and the first time I came here, I couldn’t believe such a place existed just outside town.

I always order a few of their signature dishes — the deep-fried stuffed mackerel is a must, and the spicy shrimp paste with fresh vegetables is one of the most authentic southern Thai dishes you can try. The food is spicy and very local, which is what makes it so special.

It’s not fancy, and it’s not fast, but it’s a proper Thai dining experience the way locals enjoy it. The wooden huts offer privacy and a quiet setting, and eating here feels like being in another world. You can hear the birds, see the mangroves, and completely forget you’re still in Phuket. After all these years, Mor Mu Dong is still one of my favourite places to bring visiting friends who want to try something real.

Bang Pae Seafood

Bang Pae Seafood

Location: Bang Pae – Specialities: Seafood

Popularity: 7/10 – Atmosphere: 7/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 6/10

Bang Pae Seafood has always been a go-to spot for me when I’m in the mood for lunch with a view — and especially when I’m exploring the quieter east coast. It’s located near the Bang Pae Waterfall, right on the water’s edge in a quiet mangrove bay. From your table, you can look out over the water, and depending on the tide, you’ll see boats bobbing or the exposed sandbanks. It’s very peaceful and has that old Phuket feeling.

The food here has always been consistently good. I usually go for the stir-fried squid with garlic, spicy prawn soup, and deep-fried fish topped with turmeric. Everything is cooked Thai-style, without sugar-coating the flavours for tourists, and the seafood is always fresh.

The restaurant is open-air with wooden decking, and the setting is so quiet it almost feels forgotten — in the best way. It’s popular with locals on weekends, so it can get lively, but the rest of the time it’s pretty serene. If you’re looking for a lunch stop after a waterfall visit or just want a nice Thai seafood meal away from the beach crowds, Bang Pae Seafood is a good choice.

Laem Sai Seafood

Laem Sai Seafood in Phuket

Location: North east coast – Specialities: Seafood, Thai food

Popularity: 8/10 – Atmosphere: 7/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Laem Sai Seafood is a hidden gem tucked away on the northeast coast of Phuket, near Laem Sai Pier. It’s a bit off the usual tourist path, but those who make the journey are rewarded with a truly local dining experience. The restaurant features a sprawling wooden terrace built on stilts over the water, offering panoramic views of the sea, with Coconut Island (Koh Maphrao) just ahead and the mainland in the distance. Depending on the tide, you’re either dining over serene waters or expansive mudflats, both providing a unique and tranquil backdrop.

I remember my first visit here; the peaceful atmosphere, combined with the sight of rain clouds drifting across the horizon, made for an unforgettable lunch setting. The menu boasts a wide array of Phuket-style seafood dishes at reasonable prices. Favorites include blue crabs, large prawns, and fish like grouper, sea bass, or red snapper, prepared in various styles—be it with lime sauce, soy sauce, steamed, or deep-fried. On one occasion, I ventured to try the horseshoe crab salad (Yam Kai Mangda Talay), a dish not commonly found and was pleasantly surprised by its freshness and flavor.

Laem Sai Seafood is not far from Mission Hills Golf Club, making it a convenient stop if you’re in the area. While the route is a bit remote, the journey adds to the sense of discovery. It’s a place where locals and informed expats gather, ensuring an authentic and relaxed dining experience.

Kan Eang 2

Kan Eang 2 Seafood Restaurant Phuket

Location: Chalong – Specialities: Seafood, Thai food

Popularity: 6/10 – Atmosphere: 9/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 5/10

Kan Eang 2 is one of those places that has managed to stay local even as the area around it got busier. Located near Chalong Pier, it’s the more down-to-earth sibling of the original Kan Eang@Pier, with a big open-air dining space, lots of trees, and a breezy seaside setting. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, and it’s still one of my regular lunch spots when I’m on that side of the island.

The menu is large and filled with local favourites — fresh grilled prawns, steamed fish with lime and garlic, stir-fried clams, and spicy salads. The seafood is reliably fresh, and the portions are generous. Prices are very reasonable for the location, especially considering you’re sitting just a few metres from the sea.

What I appreciate about Kan Eang 2 is that it doesn’t try too hard — it lets the food and the setting do the work. It’s usually full of locals and Thai families, which is always a good sign. It’s a bit rustic, but comfortable, and it’s one of the better places for a casual seafood meal in Chalong. Perfect after a boat trip or a morning visit to Wat Chalong.

Piang Prai

Piang Prai Restaurant

Location: Bang Pae – Specialities: Local Thai food

Popularity: 9/10 – Atmosphere: 7/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 7/10

Piang Prai is one of those places I like to take people who’ve never seen the more natural side of Phuket. It’s hidden behind the Bang Pae Waterfall in a peaceful forest setting, and it almost feels like you’ve left the island and gone upcountry. The restaurant is built on a raised wooden terrace surrounded by trees, and there’s even a small stream running underneath. It’s hard to believe you’re only a short drive from the East Coast.

The menu is packed with southern Thai favourites — spicy and full of flavour. I often order the stir-fried stink beans with shrimp (sator), spicy herbal fish soup, and the classic deep-fried fish with turmeric. It’s the kind of food that doesn’t compromise on heat or herbs.

It gets busy on weekends with locals, but during the week it’s calm and very relaxing. The setting alone is worth the trip, especially if you enjoy eating outdoors surrounded by nature. It’s not on the tourist trail, and that’s part of its charm. For me, Piang Prai is one of Phuket’s most underrated spots — perfect for a long lunch after exploring the nearby waterfall or gibbon sanctuary.

Nam Yoi Restaurant

Nam Yoi Restaurant Phuket

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Local Thai food

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 5/10 – Food: 9/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Nam Yoi is a restaurant that really shows off Phuket’s southern Thai roots. It’s tucked away in a residential area, not far from Phuket Town, and doesn’t look like much from the outside — but the food here is something special. I’ve been eating at Nam Yoi for years, and it’s still one of the places I go when I want bold, authentic flavours that haven’t been watered down for tourists.

The menu focuses on dishes you don’t often find outside the South. I always order the spicy crab curry with rice noodles (kanom jeen) and the stir-fried sator beans with prawns — both fiery and packed with herbs. The sour fish curry (gaeng som) is excellent too, but be warned: it’s seriously spicy.

There’s nothing fancy about the setting, just simple tables and fans, but the place is clean and run with care. Locals love it, and it often fills up fast around lunchtime. If you’re the kind of traveller who wants to taste the real Phuket — not just pad Thai and spring rolls — Nam Yoi is a must. Just bring your chilli tolerance and an appetite.

Krua Praya Phuket

Krua Praya Restaurant in Phuket

Location: Phuket East – Specialities: Local Thai food

Popularity: 7/10 – Atmosphere: 8/10 – Food: 9/10 – Affordability: 7/10

Krua Praya is one of those rare places that feels like a peaceful garden escape — and yet serves some of the most flavour-packed southern Thai food I’ve had in Phuket. It’s not far from the Heroine’s Monument on the way to the airport, hidden behind trees and greenery, so you wouldn’t find it unless someone told you about it. But once you’re there, the setting alone is worth the trip.

The restaurant is beautifully set up in an open-air garden under the shade of tall trees. It feels relaxed and a little off the grid — perfect for a quiet lunch or dinner with friends or family. Krua Praya has earned multiple mentions in the Michelin Guide with a Bib Gourmand rating — and for good reason.

I usually order moo hong, their excellent pad pak miang with shrimp, and the rich dried curry with crispy pork — a personal favourite if you like bold southern flavours. Their nam prik kung siap (chilli dip with dried shrimp) also stands out. The food is always fresh, beautifully presented, and reasonably priced.

Laem Hin Seafood

Laem Hin Seafood restaurant Phuket

Location: Phuket East Coast – Specialities: Seafood, Thai food

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 7/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 6/10

Laem Hin Seafood is one of Phuket’s seafood classics. It’s been around forever, and I’ve eaten here more times than I can count — mostly with Thai friends or visiting family. Located on the east coast, just across the water from Koh Maphrao Island, the restaurant is built on stilts above the water and has great views during high tide.

The seafood here is always fresh and well-priced. I usually order grilled prawns, deep-fried fish with mango salad, and a plate of crab curry if I’m with friends to share. The menu is big, with plenty of local dishes and a few milder options for those who prefer less heat.

It’s very popular with locals, so it gets busy, especially on weekends. But the service is quick and efficient, and the atmosphere is always lively. What I love most is the setting — open air, sea breeze, and no need to dress up. It’s the kind of place where you eat well, take your time, and feel like you’ve experienced a bit of the real Phuket. A great lunch or dinner stop if you’re exploring the east side or on the way to a boat trip.

Rim Pan Restaurant

Rim Pan Seafood restaurant Phuket

Location: North Phuket – Specialities: Seafood, Thai food

Popularity: 8/10 – Atmosphere: 10/10 – Food: 6/10 – Affordability: 6/10

Rimpan Seafood is one of those hidden gems that many drive past without realizing what they’re missing. Located at the northern tip of Phuket Island, right near the Sarasin Bridge connecting Phuket to the mainland, this modest restaurant offers an authentic local dining experience. The setting is simple—bamboo huts nestled among coconut trees on a quiet beach. It’s not the best spot for swimming due to some rocky areas, but the serene views across the bay more than make up for it.

I remember one lazy Sunday lunch here that stretched into the afternoon. The atmosphere is so relaxed that time seems to slow down. The menu features genuine Phuket specialties that you won’t often find in tourist spots. One standout is the Yum Kai Mang Da Talay, a spicy horseshoe crab egg salad with grated green mango—not for the faint-hearted but absolutely worth trying. Another favorite is the Chakachan Tod, deep-fried sea cicadas that resemble a cross between shrimp and fat little crabs. The Hoy Chak Teen, local shells served with a spicy, sour sauce, and the Pak Miang in Coconut Milk Soup with Prawn are also excellent choices.

The kitchen is as unpretentious as the rest of the place—just wooden walls and a couple of stoves on a bare concrete floor. But don’t let that fool you; the chefs here know their craft. Getting to Rimpan requires some wheels, as it’s a bit out of the way, but the journey is well worth it for the tranquil setting and authentic food.

One Chun Restaurant

One Chun Restaurant Phuket

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Southern Thai food

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 5/10

One Chun is probably the most stylish place on this list, but it still manages to keep its soul. Located right in the heart of Phuket Town, this restaurant blends old-world charm with serious southern Thai cooking. The building itself is beautiful — a Sino-Portuguese shophouse filled with antiques, old clocks, and nostalgic touches. It feels more like a family home than a commercial space.

I bring visiting friends here when I want to introduce them to real Phuket flavours in a setting that’s easy to enjoy. The crab curry with rice noodles is a must, and so is the stir-fried pork belly with shrimp paste. The menu is packed with local dishes, and they don’t shy away from spice, which I always appreciate.

Despite the polished look, prices are very fair, and the food is consistently good. It can get busy in the evenings, especially with Thai groups and local families, so it’s worth booking ahead. For me, One Chun is a great bridge between traditional food and a more comfortable setting — perfect for travellers who want something authentic but not too rough around the edges.

Ko Ang Seafood

Ko Ang Seafood

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 5/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 6/10

Ko Ang is a no-nonsense seafood restaurant right in the heart of Phuket Town. You wouldn’t look twice at it from the outside — it’s just a simple open-air shop with metal tables and fluorescent lighting — but once you’ve tried it, you’ll understand why it’s so popular with locals. I’ve been eating here for years, and the food has always been fresh, quick, and full of flavour.

This is where I go when I want a seafood fix without any frills. The crab is always fresh, the clams are excellent, and the deep-fried fish with garlic is one of my regular orders. Prices are reasonable, and portions are generous, especially if you’re sharing dishes with friends or family.

There’s no fancy décor, no sunset view — just solid seafood in the middle of town, cooked the way locals like it. It’s often packed at night, especially on weekends, but turnover is fast. If you’re in Phuket Town and want a taste of everyday seafood dining the local way, Ko Ang is a safe bet.

Go Benz

ko benz restaurant

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Noodle soup, porridge

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 3/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 10/10

Go Benz is a bit of an institution in Phuket Town. It doesn’t look like much — a small shophouse with a kitchen that spills out onto the pavement — but the crowds say everything. If you pass by at night and see the long queue, that’s Go Benz. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, and I still go back when I want something comforting and local.

The star dish is khao tom haeng — dry boiled rice topped with crispy pork, minced pork, a rich spoonful of sauce, and a soft-boiled egg. It’s incredibly satisfying, especially late at night. They also do excellent pork noodles, and the broth is full of flavour.

Go Benz opens in the evening and goes until late, which is perfect if you’re hungry after exploring Phuket Town or coming back from a night out. It’s not a place to linger — you eat, enjoy, and move on. It’s fast, hot, and cheap — and definitely worth the queue.

Khun Jeed's Radna Phuket

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Radna

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 8/10

If you’re into Radna — the wide rice noodles in thick gravy — then you’ll love Khun Jeed. This place has been around for decades, and it’s where locals go for one thing: radna done right. I usually order the crispy pork version or seafood, depending on my mood. The noodles are cooked fresh, the sauce is rich, and the vegetables are always crunchy — exactly how it should be.

It’s a simple shop near the edge of Phuket Town, very casual, with fast service and plastic chairs. But don’t let that fool you — this place is a little legend. I’ve brought friends here who had never tried radna before, and they were hooked from the first bite.

They also make great stir-fried noodles with dark soy sauce (pad see ew) and a few other quick dishes, but radna is the reason for coming. If you’re exploring the town and want a quick, affordable, and very local lunch, this is the place.

Jadjan by Ko Dang

jadjarn

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Local Thai food

Popularity: 6/10 – Atmosphere: 5/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 7/10

Jadjan is one of those local gems that stays under the radar — tucked just outside Phuket Town in Kathu. Not many travellers realise that it’s run by Khun Dang (Chef Suthee), a former 5-star hotel chef from Bangkok who decided to open his own humble spot. He’s been cooking here for years, and the result is some of the best southern Thai food I’ve tasted in this part of the island.

What makes Jadjan stand out is the depth of flavour in every dish. If you already know Thai food, you’ll immediately notice how much richer and more refined the taste is — every plate has that extra layer of care. It’s no surprise that Jadjan was awarded a Michelin Plate, and honestly, it deserves it.

I often order the stir-fried cashew chicken, morning glory, or whatever the daily special is — and it never disappoints. The atmosphere is friendly and low-key, prices are very reasonable, and Khun Dang himself speaks good English and always makes the effort to check on guests.

It’s not a fancy place, but it’s one of the most flavourful and genuine Thai meals you’ll find in Phuket. A quiet local success, and one worth seeking out. Read more

O Cha Rot

O Cha Rot Noodle Soup Restaurant ij Phuket Town

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Noodle soup

Popularity: 7/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 8/10

O Cha Rot is another one of those small local spots that’s easy to miss but always packed. It’s right in Phuket Town and famous for its beef noodle soup — and for good reason. The broth is rich, aromatic, and has been simmered for hours. The meat is tender, and you can choose between sliced beef, meatballs, or even tripe if you want to go all in.

I usually get the classic bowl with everything in it, plus a side of crispy wontons. The seasoning is just right, and if you like a bit of heat, they’ve got all the chili and vinegar condiments ready at the table. It’s quick, cheap, and full of local charm.

This is more of a lunchtime stop — they close in the afternoon — and it’s a favourite with nearby office workers. If you’re exploring Phuket Old Town and need a fast and satisfying meal, O Cha Rot is the place to go. It’s not fancy, but it’s the real deal.

Ko Yoon Hokkien Noodles

Ko Yoon Hokkien Noodles

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Hokkien noodles

Popularity: 6/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Ko Yoon is one of the best places in Phuket to try authentic Hokkien noodles. It’s a small, open-front shophouse near the heart of Phuket Town, and it’s been serving locals for decades. The menu is simple — you come here for one thing, and they do it well. I usually go for the stir-fried Hokkien noodles with a fried egg on top, and it always hits the spot.

The noodles are thick and chewy, cooked in a rich, dark sauce with bits of pork, seafood, and Chinese cabbage. If you want a bit more texture, the crispy version is excellent too. The portions are generous, and prices are still very low despite the restaurant’s long-standing reputation.

It’s the kind of place where you sit on small stools, order quickly, and enjoy one of Phuket’s signature street-style dishes in a totally unfussy setting. You’ll often see taxi drivers, school kids, and office workers stopping by for a quick lunch. It’s a true local favourite, and it still feels like a little time capsule from old Phuket.

Khumkathu Mookata

Location: Kathu – Specialities: Mookata

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 7/10 – Food: 6/10 – Affordability: 6/10

Khum Kathu is our go-to place when we’re in the mood for mookata — Thai barbecue that combines grilling and hot pot in one. It’s a fun, hands-on dining experience that’s great for groups or families. Located in Kathu, not far from Patong, this restaurant has been serving locals for many years and is often packed with people who know where to find a good deal.

You order a set of meat, seafood, and vegetables, then cook everything yourself on a hot pan set over charcoal. I like to get a mix of pork slices, squid, and mushrooms, then dip them all in their tasty chilli sauce. There’s also an à la carte menu if you want extras.

The vibe is very local and laid-back. It’s open-air, usually buzzing with conversation and the sound of sizzling meat. Prices are reasonable, and service is quick. If you’ve never tried mookata before, this is a great place to start — authentic, casual, and full of flavour.

ketho dim sum kathu

Location: Kathu – Specialities: Dim Sum and Kanom Jeen

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Ketho Coffee & Kitchen is a local breakfast spot that many tourists miss, even though it’s right on the main road in Kathu. I’ve been stopping here for years, especially on lazy mornings when I want something hot, simple, and local. It opens early, and it’s always busy with locals starting their day with dim sum, soft-boiled eggs, or hot soy milk.

Their dim sum is brought to your table in small steamers — you just pick what you want, and they warm it up on the spot. It’s not fancy, but it’s fresh and fast. They also serve rice porridge, grilled toast with condensed milk, and Thai-style coffee. It’s the kind of meal that’s light but satisfying.

There’s nothing touristy about Ketho, and that’s what I love about it. You sit at metal tables under a fan, drink your coffee slowly, and watch the neighbourhood wake up around you. If you want to see how locals really eat breakfast in Phuket, this is a great place to start! Read more

Boon's Local Thai Restaurant in Phuket Town

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Local Thai food

Popularity: 6/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Boon is one of those tiny, underrated spots you’d drive past if you didn’t know what you were looking for. Tucked just outside Phuket Town, it’s not a place that catches your eye — no signage, no tourist-friendly polish — but the food here has a flavour that’s stuck with me for years.

The menu is extremely minimal, but that’s part of its charm. It’s all about doing one or two dishes really well. Their standout is Khao Pad Nam Prik Moo Tod — fried rice served with spicy chilli relish and perfectly crispy fried pork. It’s the kind of dish that sounds simple, but once you’ve tasted it, you’ll understand why people keep coming back.

Boon is small, unpretentious, and very local. You might not even see another foreigner while you’re there. A typical lunch costs just a few baht, and the whole meal is served within minutes. It’s a great stop if you’re exploring the edges of town and want to try something truly local, far from the usual tourist spots. I’ve recommended it to many friends over the years — and everyone always comes back surprised at how good it is.

Kin-Kub-Ei

Kin Kub Ei Restaurant Phuket

Location: Cherngtalay (Bangtao) – Specialities: Local Thai food

Popularity: 7/10 – Atmosphere: 7/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 5/10

Kin-Kub-Ei is a true hidden gem tucked away in Cherngtalay, not far from Bangtao Beach. It’s one of the most unique southern Thai restaurants I’ve come across — not just for the food, but for how it’s run. It’s only open three days a week and strictly by reservation, which makes it a little tricky to plan — but trust me, it’s worth it.

The restaurant is set in a lovely private garden, peaceful and far from the buzz of the main road. Everything is cooked by Khun Tubtim, using her family’s traditional recipes. The menu is small, but every dish is made with care and full of bold southern flavours. I’ve had the crab curry, the stir-fried stink beans, and the fried pork belly here, and every bite felt like a home-cooked meal from someone who really loves what they do.

Kin-Kub-Ei earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and once you eat there, you’ll understand why. The food is excellent, the prices are surprisingly reasonable, and the atmosphere feels like a friend’s backyard. If you’re staying around Bangtao or Laguna and want a quiet but memorable Thai meal, it doesn’t get more personal than this. Read more

Salaloy Seafood

Salaloy Seafood Restaurant in Phuket

Location: Rawai – Specialities: Seafood and Thai food

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 8/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 5/10

Salaloy Seafood is one of those places I keep coming back to, especially when I’m in Rawai and craving something local and fresh. It’s right on Rawai Beach, split across the road — the kitchen and main restaurant are on one side, and the best seats are under tall trees just a few steps from the sea. You can watch the longtail boats bobbing in the water while the staff expertly navigate traffic, bringing plates of food from the kitchen across the road.

The food is classic southern Thai, with bold flavours and fair prices. I often go for the Yum Pak Kood Talay (fiddlehead fern salad with seafood), Moo Sam Chan Yang (grilled pork belly), and Goong Pao (charcoal-grilled prawns). The Miang Kham is fun to eat and full of textures, and the Pak Miang Pad Goong Siab is another dish that never disappoints.

The place is casual, clean, and always busy with both locals and in-the-know travellers. It’s even listed in the Michelin Guide, which says a lot about its consistency and quality.

Chaiyo Seafood

Chaiyo Seafood Restaurant in Phuket

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Seafood

Popularity: 6/10 – Atmosphere: 8/10 – Food: 6/10 – Affordability: 6/10

Chaiyo Seafood is one of those local places I like to recommend when friends want to enjoy a proper seafood lunch close to Phuket Town, but without heading too far out. It’s set right on the edge of a mangrove canal, just opposite the well-known Mor Mu Dong, but with a slightly more comfortable and open setting. The restaurant is built on a wooden deck over the water, and depending on the tide, the view is always changing.

What makes Chaiyo special is how fresh everything is — they keep their live seafood directly in the mangrove stream that runs under the restaurant. You can actually see the crabs, prawns, and fish swimming below, and pick what you want.

The food here is straightforward and full of flavour. I usually go for the grilled squid or the fried fish with garlic. The tom yum is always solid, and the prices are reasonable for the quality. It’s a quiet spot, and despite being so close to town, it still feels peaceful and local.

Kalim Rim Lay

Kalim Rim Lay Restaurant

Location: near Patong Beach – Specialities: Local Thai food

Popularity: 8/10 – Atmosphere: 8/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 7/10

Kalim Rim Lay is a super local restaurant with one of the best ocean views near Patong. It’s perched right above Kalim Beach — just north of the busy stretch — and the setting is hard to beat, especially around sunset. The tables are simple plastic ones, the menu is laminated, but the food is always fresh and packed with flavour.

I enjoy coming here when I want a proper Thai seafood meal without the tourist prices or noise of Patong. Their grilled prawns are great, and the soft-shell crab in yellow curry sauce is one of my favourites. The tom yum is spicy and served the old-school way, and the deep-fried sea bass is another solid option.

The best part is the timing — show up around 5:30 or 6 pm, grab a seat facing the sea, and just watch the sun go down while your food arrives. It’s a little rough around the edges, but that’s part of the charm. Kalim Rim Lay is one of those places you might walk past — but don’t. It’s one of the last laid-back, local spots with a view that still feels like old Phuket.

Chom Chan by One Chun

Chom Chan Restaurant in Phuket Town

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Southern Thai food

Popularity: 6/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 5/10

Chom Chan is the sister restaurant of One Chun, and while the food is just as good, the atmosphere is a little more casual and relaxed. It’s located in a standalone house near Phuket Town, with lots of open space, plenty of greenery, and a more peaceful vibe compared to its more crowded sibling. I often bring friends here when One Chun is full, and they usually end up preferring Chom Chan.

The food leans southern Thai, just like One Chun, but with a few different dishes on the menu. The crab curry is still the star, but I also like the spicy grilled pork salad, and the fried fish with turmeric is excellent. Everything comes out quickly, and the service is friendly but low-key.

The indoor-outdoor setting makes it ideal for lunch on a sunny day or dinner with a breeze. It’s close to Phuket Town but just far enough to feel like a break from the crowds. If you want southern Thai food in a comfortable setting with real flavour, Chom Chan is a great pick — and a bit easier to get into than its more famous sister.

Kha Moo Boran

Location: Kathu – Specialities: Pork Stew

Popularity: 7/10 – Atmosphere: 5/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Kha Moo Boran is one of those tiny, easy-to-miss restaurants tucked into the busy intersection in Kathu. If you don’t already know it’s there, you’ll probably drive right past — but once you’ve tried it, it’s hard not to come back. Parking can be tricky, but the flavour makes it worth the effort every time.

They serve just a few dishes, but they’ve perfected them over the years. The star is, of course, the stewed pork leg — tender, rich, and full of flavour. You can have it over rice with pickled vegetables and garlic-chilli sauce, or in noodle form with a hot tom yam broth. I usually go for both if I’m hungry — it’s too hard to choose.

There’s nothing fancy about the place: metal tables, quick service, and a steady stream of locals who clearly know a good thing. The portions are generous, the prices are low, and everything comes out fast.

It’s one of those classic Thai comfort foods that are done really well, and it’s a great stop if you’re staying in Kathu or on your way between Patong and Phuket Town. Simple, satisfying, and very local.

Hong Khao Tom Pla

Hong Khao Tom Pla

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Local Thai food

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Hong Khao Tom Pla is one of those classic late-night spots in Phuket Town where locals go for something hot, comforting, and full of flavour. It’s been around for decades, and the menu hasn’t changed much, which is a good thing. I usually come here for their fish porridge (khao tom pla), which is simple but cooked just right: soft rice, fresh slices of fish, and a clear, aromatic broth.

They also serve stir-fried dishes and side plates, but the focus here is definitely on the soup — light, nourishing, and perfect if you’ve had a long day or too much spicy food. You can also get the dry version with soup on the side, or try the fish maw or squid for a change.

The atmosphere is very local: open-air, plastic chairs, and a friendly but no-nonsense service style. It’s especially popular at night, and it can be busy around dinner time, but turnover is quick. If you want a taste of what Phuketians eat when they’re after something easy and satisfying, Hong Khao Tom Pla is a great place to try. Read more

Khao Tom Thanon Dibuk

dibuk khaotom phuket town 2

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Rice Porridge and Noodle Soup

Popularity: 8/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 7/10

Despite what the name suggests, Khao Tom Thanon Dibuk isn’t actually on Dibuk Road anymore — it moved in 2001 to Phang Nga Road, on the quieter backstreets of Phuket Town. But the name stuck, which confuses a lot of people at first. Once you find it, though, you’ll understand why locals still line up for breakfast here, year after year.

The restaurant is famous for its rice porridge (khao tom) and noodle soups, and that’s exactly what dominates the menu — simple, comforting Thai breakfast dishes done with care. I usually go early, around 7 am, and order the classic pork rice porridge or the tom yum-style soup with minced pork and egg. The flavours are light but satisfying, perfect for starting the day.

It’s only open from 6 am to noon, and it fills up fast. The Michelin Guide has listed it multiple times, which says a lot about the consistency and quality despite its very modest setting. It’s not fancy — plastic stools, ceiling fans, and a lot of regulars — but it feels like a part of Phuket’s morning rhythm. If you’re up early and want a real local breakfast, this is one of the best places to go.

Som Chit Hokkien Noodles

Som Chit Hokkien Noodle Soup Phuket

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Hokkien Noodles

Popularity: 7/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 7/10

Som Chit is one of the best places in Phuket to try real Hokkien-style noodles — a dish that’s part of the island’s Chinese heritage. It’s a tiny open-air spot just a short walk from the clock tower in Phuket Town, and it’s been serving locals for generations. The first time I came here was years ago, and the taste hasn’t changed a bit since then.

>The noodles are stir-fried in a dark soy sauce with pork, squid, and Chinese cabbage, served either dry or with a bit of broth. Add a fried egg on top, and you’ve got one of Phuket’s classic comfort foods. It’s simple, slightly sweet, a little smoky from the wok, and always satisfying.

It’s very local — small tables, plastic stools, and a short menu, but that’s exactly what makes it feel authentic. I always bring first-time visitors here to show them what old Phuket tastes like. Som Chit is a little time capsule, and the flavour speaks for itself.

Lock Tien Food Court

Lock Tien Foodcourt Phuket

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Local Thai food

Popularity: 8/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 6/10 – Affordability: 6/10

Lock Tien is a great spot to try several Phuket specialties in one go. Located near the end of Dibuk Road in the old town, this food court has been around forever and is still popular with locals. It’s not a typical food court — more like an open-sided building with food stalls that haven’t changed in decades.

This is where I go when I want a bit of everything. They have Hokkien noodles, satay pork skewers, popiah (fresh spring rolls), and lo bah (crispy pork offal) — all dishes that are part of Phuket’s unique food culture. You sit at communal tables and order from whichever vendor you like, and your food is brought over to you.

It’s casual, it’s noisy, and it’s very local — but that’s what makes it so enjoyable. Most of the people eating here are locals on lunch break or families out for a quick meal. If you’re walking around old Phuket Town and want a one-stop intro to local food, Lock Tien is the place.

Mee Ton Poe

mee ton poh

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Hokkien Noodles

Popularity: 8/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food:7/10 – Affordability: 6/10

Mee Ton Poe is one of Phuket’s best-known noodle shops, and for good reason — they’ve been serving Hokkien noodles since 1946, and the recipe hasn’t changed. Located right by the Suriyadet Circle, this open-fronted restaurant is a local institution. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, and it’s still one of my favourites when I’m craving something familiar.

The star dish is the Hokkien mee — thick yellow noodles stir-fried in a dark, savoury sauce with slices of pork, squid, and a bit of Chinese cabbage. I always order it with a fried egg on top. They also do a decent satay, and their pork or chicken rice dishes are great for non-noodle fans.

The setting is old-school Phuket — tiled floor, metal tables, ceiling fans buzzing above — and you’ll see a mix of locals and tourists who’ve read about it. If you want a taste of a true Phuket classic, Mee Ton Poe is where you go.

Pa Mai Kanom Jeen

Kanom Jeen in Phuket

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Kanom Jeen

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Pa Mai is one of the most authentic places in Phuket Town to enjoy kanom jeen, the soft rice noodles served with a choice of rich, spicy curries — a staple of southern Thai breakfasts. The restaurant is hidden in a little soi near Satun Road and is so discreet that most visitors walk past it without realising what they’re missing. I’ve been going here for years, and it’s still my favourite spot for an early local-style breakfast.

The setup is simple: you choose your curry — whether it’s crab, fish, or chicken — and they serve it over kanom jeen with fresh herbs, vegetables, and pickled greens on the side. There’s also crispy fried chicken, boiled eggs, and Thai sweets if you want to round off the meal.

It’s open only in the morning, and the place usually fills up quickly with locals, especially on weekends. Pa Mai keeps the traditions alive — nothing fancy, just great flavours and a relaxed, communal vibe. If you’ve never tried kanom jeen the way locals eat it, this is the perfect place to start.

Krua Kao Kuk

Krua Kao Kuk Restaurant in Phuket Town

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Local Thai food

Popularity: 8/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Krua Kao Kuk is a modest little place tucked away on the outskirts of Phuket Town — the kind of spot that locals know and love, but most visitors drive past without noticing. It’s not easy to find, and the setup is basic, with concrete tables and an open-air cooking station on one side of the restaurant. But once you’re seated and the food arrives, you’ll understand why it has such a loyal following.

This restaurant has been run by a Peranakan family since 1995, and they serve honest, home-style southern Thai food that’s full of flavour. I often go for their crispy pork belly, vegetables stir-fried with ginger, and the simple but always satisfying Thai omelette. Their seafood is also fresh and well-cooked — nothing fancy, just good food done right.

Krua Kao Kuk even received a Michelin Plate in 2020, which says a lot considering how low-key the place is. It’s clean, friendly, and very affordable, with no attempt to dress things up. If you’re exploring Phuket Town and want a quiet lunch somewhere truly local, this is a great stop. It’s still one of those rare places that feels unchanged after all these years — and that’s why I keep going back.

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Desserts and Local Sweets

Popularity: 9/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Wanlamun is one of my favourite places in Phuket Town — a lively, long-standing dessert restaurant where locals come to enjoy Thai sweets you rarely see in tourist spots. Forget banana pancakes or mango sticky rice. Here, you’ll find a full illustrated menu of traditional treats like Bua Loi (sticky rice balls in coconut milk), Tubtim Krob Salim with ice cream, or even the unusual Look Chok, made from a rare palm fruit.

The shop is always buzzing with families and regulars. The staff are friendly and quick, and you’re encouraged to mix and match ingredients from the counters at the front. I love sitting here and trying something new each time — there’s so much variety, and everything’s made fresh with care.

If you’re curious about Thai desserts beyond the usual, Wanlamun is where you’ll discover how sweet, creamy, and creative local flavours can be. It’s always fun, always busy — and always delicious.

Go La Hokkien Fried Noodles in Phuket Town

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Hokkien Noodles

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Go La is a tiny, family-run restaurant tucked away on Kra Road, just a little outside Phuket Town’s busy centre. It’s not easy to find unless you’re looking for it — but locals have been coming here for over three generations. What started as a modest noodle stall in the early 1900s has become a well-loved spot for authentic Hokkien-style fried noodles, earning several mentions in the Michelin Guide over the years.

The signature dish is their Hokkien noodles stir-fried with squid, prawns, fish cake, crispy pork, and egg, all tossed in a rich soy sauce. The wok aroma and slightly smoky flavour give it that old-school Phuket charm. I usually order it with pickled shallots and chilli on the side.

They also serve a thinner noodle version called Hokkien Mee Hoon, and one of the rarest local snacks: Hor Mok Kanom Krok, a delicate steamed curry custard in banana leaf. The Moo Satay is also worth trying, served with thick peanut sauce and a crunchy cucumber relish. Go La is all about flavour, tradition, and history — and it still feels like the kind of place only locals know about. It’s one of my go-to spots when I want a real taste of Phuket’s noodle heritage.

Mee Sapam

Mee Sapam Phuket

Location: near Phuket Town – Specialities: Phuket Food

Popularity: 10/10 – Atmosphere: 6/10 – Food: 8/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Mee Sapam is a legendary local restaurant that’s been around for over 50 years, quietly serving some of the most authentic Phuket food on the island. Located on the edge of town, it’s owned by Phuketian Khun Yai Chian, and has earned its place in the Michelin Guide — a rare honour for such a humble spot. I’ve eaten here many times over the years, and it still feels like stepping into the Phuket I first knew.

Their signature dish is, of course, mee sapam — stir-fried rice noodles with seafood, cooked with just the right amount of wok heat and flavour. But there’s so much more to explore on the menu. The Hoi Tod Sapam (fried oysters with a zesty sauce) is always a favourite, and their Hor Mok Poo — a creamy steamed crab curry wrapped in banana leaves — is excellent.

Other classics include Hokkien Mee with pork rib soup, and O Taw, a softer, fluffier cousin of fried oyster, full of flavour and perfect with dipping sauce. They also have grilled seafood and a small counter selling local Phuket sweets — perfect as souvenirs if you’re flying home. It’s relaxed and friendly, and the prices are surprisingly low in terms of quality. Definitely a must-visit if you want to experience true Phuket food the way locals enjoy it.

Baan Mae Taan

Baan Mae Taan Restaurant in Phuket Town

Location: Phuket Town – Specialities: Local Thai food

Popularity: 6/10 – Atmosphere: 7/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 8/10

Baan Mae Taan is a fantastic local restaurant tucked just outside the busy historical centre of Phuket Town. It’s where locals go when they want the kind of food that hits all the right notes. The name means “Mother Taan’s Home”, and the setting reflects that — clean, bright, and simply decorated with a warm personal touch. A beautiful mural of Mae Taan herself looks over the dining room, and if you’ve eaten at One Chun or Raya House, you might recognise the flavours: she’s part of the same family behind both of those well-known spots.

I’ve eaten here several times, and it’s always a satisfying experience. The Nam Prik Poo Prik Thai On — a crab meat relish with peppercorns and fresh vegetables — is full of flavour. Their Gaeng Poo Bai Cha-Plu (crab curry with betel leaves) is rich and fragrant, and the Kanom Jeen Gaeng Nua (beef curry with rice noodles) is one of those dishes you build to your own taste with all the toppings.

Chuan Chim is a well-known local restaurant in the heart of Phuket Town, right on Montri Road, not far from the clock circle and The Courtyard by Marriott. It’s in the area where most jewellery shops are, but the food here is the real gem. The restaurant is larger than it looks from the outside, simple in design but always spotlessly clean — the kind of place locals trust for a quick, tasty meal.

I’ve stopped here a few times, especially when I’m in the centre of town and need something fast and flavourful. The prices are very affordable, and the kitchen delivers solid Thai staples with no fuss. The stir-fried basil with minced pork or chicken is one of my favourites — rich, slightly spicy, and served piping hot. The seafood salad is also worth trying, fresh and packed with lime and herbs.

It’s casual, the service is quick, and there’s a good flow of regulars all day. If you’re in Phuket Town and want a reliable, affordable lunch in a clean, local setting, Chuan Chim is always a safe (and tasty) choice.

Popularity: 7/10 – Atmosphere: 8/10 – Food: 7/10 – Affordability: 6/10

Cue Bar is one of those places that most travellers walk past without noticing — from the outside, it looks like a typical Western-style bar, with a pool table, a long counter, and a few tables on the ground floor. But if you head upstairs, you’ll find one of the best-kept secrets in Phuket Town: a local rooftop restaurant overlooking the famous Thalang Road, right where the Sunday Walking Market happens every week.

I’ve eaten here a few times, and it’s always surprising how few people know about it. The atmosphere on the rooftop is relaxed, with live music in the evenings, and the view of the old town below adds to the charm. It’s a great place to sit back with a drink and enjoy the breeze after a hot day in town.

The food is simple but solid — local Thai favourites like pad kra pao, larb, and fried chicken wings are all done well and reasonably priced. It’s casual, friendly, and never too crowded. Ta Tuay is a family-run restaurant located near the northern end of Phuket, close to Mai Khao Beach. It’s a bit off the radar, but well worth the drive if you want to try rare southern Thai dishes in a peaceful garden setting. I’ve visited a few times over the years, and I always leave impressed by how deeply local the food feels.

The menu includes a lot of unique dishes you don’t see often, like Gaeng Som Pla (sour fish curry), spicy sataw stir-fry, and even horseshoe crab salad when it’s in season. The flavours are bold and very southern — definitely not toned down.

The restaurant is surrounded by trees and has a warm, homey atmosphere. The staff are welcoming and happy to explain any dish you’re not familiar with. Thai Mueang Restaurant is a delightful spot nestled in a beautifully renovated, standalone Sino-Portuguese house painted pristine white. Located right next to the renowned Blue Elephant Mansion in Phuket Town, this charming establishment offers a serene and elegant dining atmosphere. The recent renovations have meticulously preserved the historical essence of the architecture while infusing modern comforts, making it a picturesque setting for a meal.

The restaurant specializes in Khao Kha Moo, a traditional Thai dish featuring tender braised pork leg served over rice. Prepared in the authentic Phuket style, the pork is succulent and flavorful, complemented by a rich, aromatic sauce. The accompanying pickled vegetables and boiled eggs add a delightful contrast, making each bite a harmonious blend of textures and tastes.
